Maleficent sequel on the way

Disney's Maleficent raked in a whopping $758 million last year, paving the way for the studio's current drive to convert a whole host of its classic animated properties into live-action adventures. And having performed so well at the box office, it isn't particularly surprising to learn that the Mouse House is now planning to release a sequel.

According to Deadline, the studio has charged original screenwriter Linda Woolverton with creating a new script chronicling the further adventures of the popular anti-heroine. Disney execs are though to be hopeful of coaxing Angelina Jolie into a return, with the star said to be "in the loop" across ongoing developments.

Whether or not she will be sold on the idea remains to be seen. Jolie has been notoriously resistant to sequels in the past when not contracted for a return. That is the case again here, so there may yet be a few hurdles to clear before this one is fully up and running…
