Kodi Smit-McPhee joins X-Men: Apocalypse as Nightcrawler

X-Men: Apocalypse is set to introduce another younger version of a mutant fan-favourite, with Kodi Smit-McPhee officially on board to play Nightcrawler.

The news was confirmed by director Bryan Singer, who posted on Instagram: “Excited to welcome @kodismitmcphee to the cast of #XmenApocalypse as young #Nightcrawler.”

Smit-McPhee becomes the latest up and coming actor to join the project, with Alexandra Shipp, Sophie Turner, and Tye Sheridan having recently been cast as younger versions of Storm, Jean Grey and Cyclops.

Nightcrawler has long been a favourite of Singer’s, with the director having introduced him to the big screen back in X-2, and even planned to write him into Days Of Future Past.

“I was going to have Nightcrawler [in Days of Future Past] and even wrote a scene,” explained Singer, back in 2014, “but I felt that we were forcing too many mutants into the story.”

Directed by Singer and co-starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence, X-Men: Apocalypse will open in the UK on 19 May 2016 and the US on 27 May 2016.
