Fox TV remaking Spaced

Oh, no. Oh, no no no no no… No. Just. No. Just… no thank you. What are we so distraught about? The news that the American Fox network has bought the rights to adapt one of the best British comedies ever made.

Spaced, the show that helped put Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s careers in high gear has been nabbed by the US network for an extreme makeover.

If you’ve never seen the show, stop what you’re doing and go buy it on DVD. If it’s late and the shops are shut, wander the streets asking random strangers if you can borrow their discs. But if all that fails, the basic plot follows two slackers (a comic book artist and a journalist – sort of) who pose as a couple to get a flat. But it’s so much more than that, littered with pop culture references and the sort of frenzied editing we all know and love from Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz.

Adam Barr, who used to work on Will & Grace is overseeing the new version with We Are Marshall/Charlie’s Angels’ helmer McG as the producer.

All we’ll say on the matter is this: it better be good. Oh, and the US version of The Office is the exception, rather than the rule. Ask anyone who saw the Yank stab at Coupling…
