It’s always worth investing in young, promising players because unlike players in their prime, they haven’t yet peaked and can go on to even better things - making the initial outlay feel like small change compared to the benefits they bring.

So if you’re looking for the next big thing regardless of the cost, these are the best young players you can buy in FIFA 16 - with some of the highest potential ratings in the game. We’ve picked a range of positions, so hopefully there should be a player for your team in here.

Thibaut Courtois
GK, age 23, OVR 86, potential 90, Chelsea
Standing tall at 6’6”, the young Chelsea stopper may only be 23 but is already one of the best keepers in the game. His all-round game is superb - handling, diving, positioning, you name it, he can do it. And best of all? With 90 potential he will get even better. Just be warned that Chelsea really don’t want to sell him, so you’ll need to offer an astronomical fee to get him.

Raphael Varane
CB, age 22, OVR 82, potential 89, Real Madrid, cost £25.5m
Without a doubt one of the best young centre backs in FIFA 16, Varane is already good enough to grace any top division in the game. He’s strong but, unusually for a centre back, has bags of pace - no Mertesacker comparisons here. He’s incredible in the air (his 85 heading accuracy will net him plenty of goals), while his fantastic tackling stats make him a rock at the back.

Paul Pogba
CM, age 22, OVR 86, potential 92, Juventus, cost £71.5m
Where to start with Paul Pogba? Just 22 years old and already the complete midfielder. He’s strong, fast and can run all game. He can pass, shoot, tackle and even take free kicks with equal aplomb. In fact there’s very little he can’t do - so just imagine how good he’ll be when he reaches his 92 potential. Fergie must be kicking himself for letting him go.

James Rodríguez
CAM, age 23, OVR 87, potential 93, Real Madrid
Real Madrid midfielder Rodríguez is pretty much the perfect attacking midfielder. His 84 short passing and 88 crossing make him a chance creator extraordinaire, while his deadly long shots and 85 finishing will see him making - and taking - opportunities for himself. If your team lacks that extra bit of creative flair, he’s your man. However, like Courtois, it’ll take a gigantic sum to pry him away from Real Madrid.

Alvaro Morata
ST, age 21, OVR 81, potential 88, Juventus, cost £33.5m
Some strikers are quick and tricky, others are powerful target men, but with Alvaro Morata you get it all. His 85 sprint speed, 84 dribbling and 84 finishing will make him a menace in the box, but don’t put him down as a weakling - at 6’2” and with 79 strength, he can hold his own against defenders. His combination of pace and power make him a top-class all-rounder.
