Comic book action movie Red is set to receive the sequel treatment, with screenwriters Jon and Erich Hoeber hired to pen a follow-up script.
The first film took an impressive $164m at the worldwide box office, and earned itself a nomination at the Golden Globes this year for Best Motion Picture (Comedy Or Musical).
Collider ’s sources revealed the deal, though the site cautions that hiring writers for a script isn’t the same as giving a project a green light – studio Summit will have to like the screenplay before they turn any bulbs on.
Considering how much fun the first film was – mostly thanks to the chemistry of its cast – there’s definitely room for more. Though there is a worry that a sequel could stretch the material too thin.
Clearly, key to a follow-up would be re-uniting stars Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren and John Malkovich for another old-timers romp.
If Jon and Erich Hoeber’s work on the first Red is anything to go by, Red 2 should be both explosive and entertaining. With Helen Mirren looking awesome firing a machine gun.
