This has been a big year for you with Midnight In Paris and Thor. Who'd win in a fight - Loki or Ernest Hemingway?

Hemmingway is constantly going ‘do you box?’ and ‘ever shot a charging lion?’ Loki would put Hemmingway’s machismo back in its box!

Did you ever get wig envy on the set of Avengers working with Scarlett and Chris?

No! The top half of my hair was my own and then they kind put a half wig at the back. Like an evil mullet. I am like an evil Pat Sharp.

How was it to work with Benedict Cumberbatch in War Horse? And doesn't he have the best name in history?

It was amazing to work with Ben. He’s become a very dear friend of mine and I feel very proud of him from the far, or close distance of being a contemporary of his. He’s having such an incredible moment. I think he’s phenomenally talented. He’s one of the finest actors of our generation and it was a real privilege to work with him.I think Englebert Humperdink has a sillier name than Benedict Cumberbatch.

If you could only watch the same three films for the rest of your life, which movies would you choose and why?

Heat because I just love it. It’s long! There’s 15 characters you care about. It’s such a tight, taut detailed thriller and I’ve become really sentimentally attached to it.

Braveheart because it keeps my spirits up. It’s my dad’s favourite film. There’s something in it that’s really rousing. It’s a really fantastic film.

City Slickers because I just love it. It’s not because it’s an amazing fantastically brilliant film, I just really love it.

In the comics Loki briefly turned into a woman. If this were to be introduced in The Avengers or Thor 2, would you be comfortable relinquishing Loki to another person, or would you insist on playing the part in drag?

I don’t know that in drag I would look nearly as good as Loki would like to look. What really happens in the comics is Loki comes back in the body of Sif – she was the warrior valkyrie played by Jaimie Alexander. So Jaime would have to play it. Jaime is gorgeous and I’d be right behind her.

If you weren't playing Loki and you could play one of the superheroes instead which superhero would you most want to play and why?

I’ve always loved the bad guys. I love Batman. Batman’s cool. Michael Keaton as Batman – I love Christian Bale but no one will surpass Michael Keaton for me. He was the best Bruce Wayne too because he was a bit off the wall and a bit weird.

I've recently named my cat after your character in Thor/The Avengers. Besides this, what is the proudest moment of your career?

Incredible! I’ve had so many amazing moments. I think it was the end of the day that we shot the scene in the middle of Thor between Odin and Loki in the vault when he finds out the truth of his origins. At the end of that day Ken [Branagh] came up to me and said, ‘You were brilliant today and I’m very proud of you’ and then on the way past, Tony Hopkins tapped Ken on the shoulder and said, ‘He’s alright, isn’t he, this kid, he’s alright’.

I LOVED Midnight In Paris. What was it like to be working with Woody Allen and how familiar where you with your character Fitzgerald?

I knew his writing. I’d read The Great Gatsby and Tender Is The Night. I had to read a lot more. I read his short stories and his letters. His letters are beautiful, his letters to Zelda. They loved each other so deeply but they were so destructive – mutually destructive. They consumed each other. And Woody was extraordinary. He exceeded my expectations of being a twinkling, remote, slightly neurotic bespectacled man. Woody Allen is a living icon and he totally lives up to the Silhouette.

Out of 10, how good a dancer are you?

I can’t answer that. Someone else has to answer that. Out of 10 how enthusiastic a dancer am I? 11. Maybe I should go on strictly. Maybe not…

If you could be the God of anything what would it be?

I would like to be the god of dancing… The god of the party!
