Win a copy on DVD and the creepy mask from the film
To anyone on the outside, Live Action Role Play probably just looks like a group of people dressing up and messing about in the woods. LARPing is a deadly serious business for some though, no more so than in The Wild Hunt , an award-winning modern tragedy from Canadian filmmakers Alexandre Franchi and Mark A. Krupa.
We’ll let the press release do the explaining: “Clinging to the imagined glory of his Icelandic Ancestry, Bjorn (Mark A. Krupa) immerses himself as a LARPer in Medieval re-enactment games. His brother Erik despises this escapist fantasy world. His dislike of this obsession is born out of the fact that due to his absent brother, Erik has to now take on the full responsibility of caring for their father, sacrificing his own freedom. But things go from bad to worse when his girlfriend Lyn not only becomes involved with the world of the LARPers, but is also seduced by Murtagh, the charismatic clan leader in the game so loved by his absent brother. He realises that he has now to follow her into the game if he is to stand any chance of winning her back.
Feeling completely lost in a fantasyland of arcane rules, plastic-eared elves and mead-guzzling knights, Erik must now rely on his brother for guidance. Things become gradually more fraught and emotions start to run high as their mission to win back the Princess stirs up the jealousy of Murtagh and his gang. Drama and fake weaponry start to appear far more sinister than they should, and the line between fantasy and reality disappears so that no one knows who they really are.”
Sounds good, eh? SFX awarded it a healthy three stars in it’s latest issue, and The Wild Hunt is available to own on DVD from 10 October 2011 (RRP £15.99). You can win a copy in our top competition, but that’s not all because one lucky winner will also receive the creepy mask you see on the cover of the DVD above, perfect for terrifying friends/other halves/small children.
