Jake Gyllenhaal stars in red-band trailer for End Of Watch: watch now

End Of Watch has released a bruising red-band trailer in which Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena head into some of L.A.'s meanest neighbourhoods in order to shut down the drug cartels operating within.

Gyllenhaal and Pena play a pair of beat cops who find themselves in way over their heads when they attempt to go further than their department encourages in the war on drugs: essentially, they tool up and attempt to take down the big boys on their own.

Employing a hyper-realistic documentary style, writer/director David Ayers looks to have created an intriguing new take on the traditional crime genre, with Gyllenhaal looking particularly menacing as the shaven-headed copper with ideas above his station.

What with all the swearing, shaven skulls and big old guns, this one looks to be drenched in testosterone, although Anna Kendrick's presence should go some way towards balancing that out in the finished article. Clearly she's not macho enough to make the red-band trailer, which also ditches the film's prominent streak of rowdy comedy.

Playing out through the handheld cameras of the officers, gang members and surveillance units stationed around the city, End Of Watch promises to present a unique take on the traditional cops and robbers tale. The film opens in the UK on 23 November 2012.
