If you've been holding off on investing in the new Nintendo Switch 2 until a revised version with an OLED display came on the scene, I might have some good news for you. Emphasis on might, as these are only rumours for now, coming from an apparent Nintendo Insider.
A report from ZDNET Korea, as discovered by Digital Foundry suggest that a Nintendo Switch 2 OLED could one day come to fruition. According to the leak (aided by Google Translate), Nintendo of Japan is considering a gaming handheld with an updated HD 1280x720 resolution, and that there's a "possibility development will begin at the end of the year."
As it stands, the Nintendo Switch 2 has a 7.9-inch LCD screen with a 1920x1080 resolution, HDR10 support, and VRR up to 120Hz (in handheld mode). According to the insider, this proposed new model would instead have a display supplied by Samsung, which also provided the screen for the original Switch OLED model launched back in 2021.
The ZDNET Korea report shares that if this model is approved, there's a chance that mass production can be expected "as early as the end of 2027 or beginning 2028." However, there was no mention or inclination as to what price you could expect to pay for this spruced-up Nintendo handheld.
The original Nintendo Switch OLED model launched for $350, a $50 upgrade from the original $299.99 Switch model. However, that was before the world of gaming and tech was plagued by inflation and rising costs as a result of the RAM Storage Crisis. With that in mind, I can only imagine that a Switch 2 OLED model would cost a pretty penny, especially when even the basic LCD model is going to be as high as $500 as of September 1, 2026.
Whatever its price could be, I'd take this information with a big grain of salt. The ZDNET Korea report shares its talked to a Nintendo Insider, but the company itself has made no official announcements regarding a new Nintendo Switch 2 with a fancy new display. I'd sooner hope for a Nintendo Switch 2 Lite to allow those wanting to play Switch 2 exclusives like Pokemon Pokopia the ability to afford a cheaper handheld, without having to part with the soon-to-be $500 MSRP.
In the meantime, we do have official confirmation that a brand-new Nintendo Switch 2 with a replaceable battery has been confirmed, and you can expect the new model to be released in Europe next year. There's no fancy new screen here, but the battery can be replaced to allow for easy fixing and help combat e-waste, to comply with EU regulations regarding batteries and waste.
