After 5 years, Terraria 1.4.5 sees the iconic sandbox game hit another high with over 160,000 players exploring its new Minecraft-inspired world seed and more

Terraria's long-awaited 1.4.5 update is finally here, and boy, is it packing some content – so much content, in fact, that the iconic sandbox game has officially managed to rack up its second-highest player peak to date.

A quick look at SteamDB shows that Terraria hit its all-time peak in 2020 when update 1.4, Journey's End (or not-so-end, really), launched, with 489,886 players flocking to the game to explore what many thought would be its final major patch. Now that 1.4.5 is here – an update that's been three years in the making – that record of five years could just be challenged. The current 24-hour peak is 164,067 players… the sandbox gem's second most impressive.

It's not out there to think this number might grow, either. While it might not smash the prior high of nearly 500,000 altogether, it's a massive achievement on its own – one that's not so surprising when considering all the content that update 1.4.5, also amusingly dubbed "Bigger & Boulder" by developer Re-Logic, brings to the table. First, there are the two crossovers: one with indie roguelike Dead Cells and another with Palworld.

The crossover content isn't the only exciting addition – not even by a long shot. If you're a big Minecraft enthusiast (hi, it's me), there's a brand-new world seed to look forward to trying out as well: Skyblock. Standing, or perhaps floating, in the sky, this world forces you to try and survive by building with scarce resources and… well, the risk of falling to your death. It draws inspiration from the same beloved world concept from Minecraft.

There's plenty more to enjoy, too, from vampirism to new transformations to… an RC car? For all you decorators, there are new blocks and furniture items, including the downright stunning Aetherium set, Gothic collection, and the creepy-crawly Corruption and Crimson furnishings. In other words, if you're not already a part of the almost 165,000 players checking 1.4.5 out, you probably should be – I know I can't wait to dive in myself.

Cheers to a fresh era of Terraria, filled with newcomers and longtime fans returning alike – one that's Bigger & Boulder, as Re-Logic has so aptly described it. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have blocks to mine and summons to whip into shape.
