The Witcher 3 director is "really comfortable" with fans comparing his new vampire RPG to CD Projekt Red's best game, and not just because he directed it

Not afraid of curling the monkey's paw, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's director isn't shying away from everyone comparing his new vampiric RPG to the CD Projekt Red masterpiece he previously had a hand in creating. That's how confident he is in The Blood of Dawnwalker.

The Blood of Dawnwalker was always going to court comparisons to The Witcher 3. It's a third-person action-RPG set in a dark fantasy world, full of succulent moral dilemmas, story-splitting decisions, and romance with (fingers crossed) the other hot vampires. In case that wasn't enough, Rebel Wolves' debut game is also being built by several former CD Projekt Red leads, including director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz.

When asked about the constant chatter about the two games, in an interview with TheGameBusiness, Tomaszkiewicz says he's "really comfortable" with all the comparisons. "I feel really confident about our game."

The Blood of Dawnwalker will obviously have mammoth-sized boots to fill if anyone's jumping into the game expecting another experience on par with The Witcher 3, a game that's sold over 60 million copies and is still one of the most beloved RPGs ever made, but the director's confidence is reassuring, at least.

Then there's the fact that The Blood of Dawnwalker simply looks plain old great so far. You probably don't need me to tell you that its vibes are immaculate, but I'm also really intrigued to see how its open-ended structure will play out since Dawnwalker's following Fallout and Breath of the Wild by making almost everything optional. Aside from an entrapped family that's waiting to be saved, you can tackle whatever you like in the game's 30 days and 30 nights. Some quests will actually completely change depending on the time of day, so I imagine there'll be plenty of reasons to boot up a second or third playthrough.

The Blood of Dawnwalker doesn't have a release date yet, but it's due to come to PC, PS5, and Xbox later this year.

The Blood of Dawnwalker devs "were afraid that people wouldn't want to play as human Coen" so it set out to create "a combat system that can set a new standard for RPGs."
