Gothic, the beloved 2001 fantasy action RPG that boasted "over 50 hours of gameplay" and first pulled us into Myrtana, is returning this year with a shiny brand-new remake from THQ Nordic – a remake that finally has a solid release date.
Memories of my childhood include a downright ridiculous amount of time poured into the likes of Elder Scrolls gems – such as the ever-chaotic Morrowind and later, Skyrim – but also another legendary RPG from the early 2000s: Gothic.
It sparked my love of medieval fantasy with its open-world charm and immersive qualities (and, yes, its brutal difficulty). It's dark, it's gritty, it's unforgiving, it's fun… but most importantly, it's back.
Or, well, it will be this summer. THQ Nordic has announced that its new Gothic remake is set to launch on June 5 this year, dropping a trailer alongside its release date reveal.
To say that it looks absolutely sick would be an understatement, with totally revamped visuals and a world I can only describe as some sort of Dragon's Dogma 2 and Oblivion Remastered mashup. In other words, it looks brilliant – I'm just sad it's four months away.
I'm not alone in thinking the new Gothic appears as though it'll be a lot of fun, either. Recent comments on the trailer show similar thoughts, with one person wording it beautifully: "This is my most anticipated game in the last 10 years of the gaming industry." I'd agree, but there is also The Elder Scrolls 6, of course.
Other folks exclaim that it "looks awesome" and say that they're "beyond excited" to play when Gothic arrives.
Thankfully, it'll be available on virtually all consoles (except the Nintendo Switch 2), coming to PC via Steam, Xbox Series S | X, and PlayStation 5. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a 25-year-old game to enjoy in anticipation of its remake.

After spending years with her head in various fantastical realms' clouds, Anna studied English Literature and then Medieval History at the University of Edinburgh, going on to specialize in narrative design and video game journalism as a writer. She has written for various publications since her postgraduate studies, including Dexerto, Fanbyte, GameSpot, IGN, PCGamesN, and more. When she's not frantically trying to form words into coherent sentences, she's probably daydreaming about becoming a fairy druid and befriending every animal or she's spending a thousand (more) hours traversing the Underdark in Baldur's Gate 3. If you spot her away from her PC, you'll always find Anna with a fantasy book, a handheld video game console of some sort, and a Tamagotchi or two on hand.
