After years of leaks and rumors, Ubisoft has finally unveiled Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, which you'd think could put an end to the series' upcoming projects being spoiled. Apparently, that may not be the case, as leakers claim a remake of the first game is also in development, so here we go again.
As highlighted by Eurogamer, these latest whispers started following the latest episode of the Insider Gaming Weekly podcast, in which Insider Gaming co-founder Tom Henderson claimed that "there is another Assassin's Creed remake in the works, one of the earlier ones." While he didn't elaborate on which game this could be, it's now been suggested by content creator j0nathan (who Eurogamer notes has served as a fairly reliable Assassin's Creed leaker in the past, having previously leaked the name of Valhalla's Dawn of Ragnarök DLC, for example) that it's actually Assassin's Creed 1.
While it's worth taking all this with a pinch of salt, the idea that there's another remake in the works isn't surprising at all. In fact, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot already suggested as such back in 2024, when he teased that "players can be excited about some remakes" – note the plural there. J0nathan claims (via machine translation) that he heard about this other rumored remake from a contact back in 2023, so the timing roughly lines up there.
Article continues belowAs for whether Assassin's Creed 1 is truly next to receive the remake treatment, it's impossible to say for sure at this point – after all, the fact that a Black Flag remake has been announced first means Ubisoft isn't going in order of release. With that said, the first game in the series is approaching its 20th anniversary next year (sorry to make you feel old), so, it'd be appropriate timing. Again, not that that matters when you look at Black Flag's original release compared to Resynced's, but it feels more impactful when you're looking at the game that started the series as a whole.
We'll just have to wait and see what comes of this – I can't imagine Ubisoft will fancy a repeat performance of Black Flag Resynced's endless leaks, so it remains to be seen if another remake's existence could be quite as leaky. Then again, if these latest claims do end up being true… we're not off to a great start.
