Pragmata devs almost gave Diana a bob cut to save on the time and money it would take to animate her hair
Capcom had doubts in the middle of development
Pragmata's supporting hero Diana has hair that's almost as tall as her body and apparently took a huge amount of effort to animate properly. In fact, Diana's head of hair was so demanding that developers working on this year's breakout action game actually considered giving her the cost-cutting, hair-cutting treatment.
As reported on by Famitsu and translated by Automaton, character artist Kenji Irie and animator Serina Ohara spoke about the game's various bad hair days during the Computer Entertainment Developers Conference 2026.
The duo reportedly explained how most games use something called hair cards, which are flatter hair textures where the individual strands aren't animated separately. For Diana, flat hair wouldn't suffice. The devs apparently animated each strand individually and had to work on 430,000 animation points to make her mane move properly.
To save on the exorbitant money and time it would take to produce, process, and animate Diana's hair, the developers toyed around with the idea of a makeover. A makeover in the form of a bob cut, I should add, right smack in the middle of production. The Pragmata team apparently even made a model to test her new bob.
In the end, Pragmata didn't launch with a blond Edna Mode following players around. Capcom's team felt that a longer and wilder hairstyle suited Diana's personality more, and a girl who's spent her whole life on the moon likely wouldn't be getting regular haircuts anyway.
Short hair or no, Pragmata's become a big success in just a few short months. Capcom recently hinted that chances of a potential Pragmata 2 are high, and it's all thanks to the game selling over 2.5 million copies without any brand recognition.
