Capcom says sike, we actually are releasing Onimusha: Way of the Sword early with the action game now set to escape the pre-GTA 6 rush
From September to... slightly earlier in September
Capcom's pulled an old switcharoo on us. After announcing a release date for Onimusha: Way of the Sword and then pinkie promising that release date would definitely hold, Capcom's actually moved the samurai action game forward by a few weeks. Sike!
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is now coming out on September 4, 2026 on PC, Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and Nintendo Switch 2. "Experience the beginning of Musashi's journey with the demo and pre-order for bonus items when the full game arrives." the publisher writes. That's three weeks earlier than its original September 25 launch, mind you.
What makes this reverse-delay somewhat curious is that a retailer listing recently suggested the new Onimusha game would, in fact, come out earlier than intended on September 4. Even more curiously, Capcom was very quick to shut down the speculation and double down on the original date, despite seemingly changing its mind a week later.
Capcom's road to this new release date has been slightly strange, but the decision makes total sense if you take even a cursory glance at the upcoming games calendar. Spoilers: Seemingly every publisher and their parents are rushing to launch games ahead of the inevitable behemoth that is GTA 6.
Late September and early October is absolutely jam-packed with heavy-hitting games, from Marvel's Wolverine and Gears of War: E-Day to Control Resonant and Silent Hill: Townfall – no one wants to be sucked up by Rockstar Games' black hole, which is set to start its rampage this November. Not only will GTA 6 dominate sales charts, but online discussion will also be dominated by the game, potentially making it tricky for other developers to break through the noise.
Mind you, Onimusha's new release date is also pretty tightly-packed, but there should be a tad more breathing room for the action series that's been dormant for years.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword brings God of War's blockbuster action to horror-tinged feudal Japan.
