Capcom refuses to back down from the not-GTA 6 games rush, re-commits to Onimusha: Way of the Sword's September release date despite rumors
"Once more, Onimusha: Way of the Sword releases on September 25, 2026"
When Rockstar announced that GTA 6 would launch in November 2026, seemingly every big game within a two-month orbit of that date began scrambling for a plan: release during the same general timeframe and risk being swallowed by the biggest game of the century, or get the heck out of the way. As you might expect, many developers and publishers chose the latter option, and coincidentally, September turned out to be a very popular alternative release month, apparently far enough away from GTA 6's tidal wake for them to feel comfortable launching their games.
Capcom was one of many companies who chose a September launch, earlier this month confirming at long last that Onimusha: Way of the Sword is coming out September 25. However, that date was thrown into question just last week when a retailer listing seemed to suggest Capcom was planning to shift the release date forward by a few weeks. The reasonable assumption was that so many games moved to late September due to a fear of GTA 6 that they inadvertently created a similarly challenging environment for themselves due to there now being such a crowded market for that specific window.
After three chunky paragraphs, I'm now realizing that was a very long setup just so say, Onimusha: Way of the Sword isn't getting a new release date, Capcom has confirmed. In the latest Capcom Spotlight, an unnamed English-speaking narrator seemingly responds to rumors of a release date shift, confirming, "Once more, Onimusha: Way of the Sword releases on September 25, 2026."
In case you're wondering about all of the games Capcom is going up against this September, I don't possibly have time to list them all, but some of the bigger ones include Marvel's Wolverine, Silent Hill: Townfall, Control Resonant, The Blood of Dawnwalker, and Shinobi Art of Vengeance. Needless to say, Onimusha has enough of a following to easily compete with those games, but we'll see which games emerge victorious when the dust settles, and more importantly, which will stand the test of time in a post-GTA 6 world.

After earning an English degree from ASU, I worked as a corporate copy editor while freelancing for places like SFX Magazine, Screen Rant, Game Revolution, and MMORPG on the side. I got my big break here in 2019 with a freelance news gig, and I was hired on as GamesRadar's west coast Staff Writer in 2021. That means I'm responsible for managing the site's western regional executive branch, AKA my home office, and writing about whatever horror game I'm too afraid to finish.
