Team Asano is remaining hush-hush about whether Octopath Traveler 3 is in production or not, but the developer knows how much fans want another sequel in the HD-2D prognosticator. It's just that a hypothetical Octopath Traveler threequel would need to be ambitious enough to justify its existence.
That's according to series producer Tomoya Asano, speaking to Dengeki Online in a celebratory interview for the Octopath Traveler series' eighth anniversary. (thanks for the translation, Automaton!)
While Asano's not saying much about the game's potential existence, he does recognize how much fans seem to want the series to continue almost 10 years on from its start. "We genuinely feel [fans' expectations], I just wanted to convey that," he says, though he's not able to share anything more concrete.
Should a Octopath Traveler 3 finally come to fruition – assuming it's not already in the oven – Asano says the developers feel they "cannot simply release something half-baked." A continuation of the franchise would need go all out. "If we're going to do it, we're going to push the limits."
Asano likely can't reveal anything about what's brewing in Octo Land, but he does hint that something is probably in the works, regardless: "Keep looking forward to what comes next."
Octopath Traveler first ushered in the era of HD-2D RPGs back in 2018, carving a road for everything from Dragon Quest's recent remakes to the upcoming Final Fantasy Resonance. Octopath Traveler 2 then continued the series' excellent turn-based fights and eight-sided narrative in 2023. And last year's Octopath Traveler 0 most recently adapted a mobile spin-off to insert town-building and eight-character combat to the series' formula.
What's next? 16 active party members? Even more branching story threads to pull on and juggle at the same time? A still-hypothetical Octopath Traveler 3 would have a daunting road ahead of it.
