Elden Ring Nightreign, FromSoftware's surprise roguelike spin-off game, seems more or less over when it comes to new updates. After the release of the Forsaken Hollows DLC, there hasn't been any hints at more to come.
While desperate fans despair at FromSoftware's silence, the rest of us can enjoy the fruits of some fans who are making their own fun. Animator and artist Keith Garces—who made some of the best "Hop on Nightreign" videos out there—and programmer Spagato just dropped an endless runner based on Nightreign.
It's called Revenant Run and it stars the short doll Nightfarer and the gigantic sword that players love to give her in every meme. Your goal in it is pretty simple: smack monsters, collect runes, level up, and avoid running into trees.
There are some clever nods at some of my favorite enemies from Nightreign, like the big guy with a pumpkin head and the little pot boys. Revenant slashes through them with one swipe and keeps moving like someone just told her there's a bigger sword somewhere to the right of the screen.
If I had access to this game in the computer lab of my middle school I would've never went back to class. Flash games might be gone, but at least we have people on Itch.io keeping the dream alive.
Garces says the game was made to "celebrate a very dedicated community," in a message below the game on Itch.io. They also thanked all the players who enjoyed their videos in the description of the YouTube trailer. "It really is a pleasure to know that the same videos I do for fun is something that can resonate with others," they wrote.
We can only hope The Duskbloods cultivates a similarly creative bunch of players who will keep the game alive much longer than FromSoftware will. Or whatever games studio president Hidetaka Miyazaki was talking about in a recent statement about what's on the docket for the future.
