This is a historically unlikely matchup, the first Super Bowl since 2003 featuring two teams that missed the playoffs the year before. New England enters as a 4.5-point underdog, a role that has thrived in recent Super Bowls.
The Seahawks entered the season expecting a rebuild. Seattle moved on from longtime head coach Pete Carroll, narrowly missed the playoffs in Mike Macdonald's first year, and made the bold decision to replace Geno Smith with free-agent quarterback Sam Darnold, a move that raised eyebrows at the time.
Instead, it fuelled a breakout season. Seattle won 14 games, captured the NFC West, and earned the No. 1 seed. Darnold flourished, Jaxon Smith-Njigba emerged as the league’s top receiver, and the Seahawks rode an elite defense to Super Bowl LX, leading the NFL in defensive EPA/play and scoring defense while knocking out two division rivals in the playoffs.
New England's rise was just as surprising. With Mike Vrabel in his first year as head coach and Drake Maye in his first full season as the starter, the Patriots faced early doubts after a Week 1 loss to the Raiders. They responded by reclaiming the AFC East and finishing with 14 wins.
Maye quickly established himself as one of the NFL's best quarterbacks, ranking first in EPA+CPOE composite and leading the league’s most efficient passing attack. The Patriots also fielded a strong defense, finishing top five in scoring defense and top six against the run.
