With Avengers: Doomsday being the first Avengers movie in five years, it is understandable that Marvel fans want it to be as long as possible, and from recent comments made by directors the Russo brothers, it sounds like we're going to get what we have been waiting for.
"It's too early to say what the running time is. But it's substantial," said Anthony Russo to Collider at San Diego Comic-Con 2026. When asked if it will be over three hours, the co-director added, "Hopefully we will make you happy."
Earlier this month, it was reported that the movie had a working runtime of 2 hours and 45 minutes. But if Doomsday is indeed over three hours long, it would be the longest MCU movie in history, a title currently taken by Avengers: Endgame, which clocks in at 3 hours and 1 minute. However, the reason why the Russos cannot confirm the runtime just yet is because the movie isn't complete.
"We're deep in the edit, but we are not finished with the movie," added Anthony. "We're still kneading the dough, and will continue to for as long as we can. The movie is so complex, it's so layered, there are so many amazing characters in the film. Joe and I love the editing process, and we continue to find new things as we continue to work on the film."
However, some cut of the film must be floating about, as Doctor Doom star Robert Downey Jr. has said that he has already seen it. "I'm on the inside track, and it is absolutely fantastic," said Downey to Entertainment Weekly. Then when Red Guardian star David Harbour asked if it was better than the footage shown inside of Hall H, Downey replied, "It's like that except extra, and I'll sidebar with all of you. I think we may redeem ourselves yet."
The movie needs to be long enough to not only fit in its stacked cast list, but to introduce a new era of Marvel cinema. The movie's new synopsis reads, "As the Multiverse Saga begins its final chapter, beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and ultimately face an existential threat unlike anything they've ever encountered. This epic film will lay the foundation for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe."
Alongside Downey, Doomsday's stacked cast list includes Chris Evans' Steve Rogers, Chris Hemsworth's Thor, the Thunderbolts, the Fox-era X-Men, the new Fantastic Four, the Wakandans, and so many more
