Positive Mortal Kombat 2 first reactions say it's pure fan service but a "gory good time"

Mortal Kombat 2 has got some positive early reactions from fans and critics, calling it a vast improvement on the original movie. The sequel to the 2021 adaptation transports the action to a new tournament where the champions of Earthrealm are forced to battle it out once again.

This time, they're joined by some new reinforcements, including Karl Urban's Johnny Cage and Adeline Rudolph's Kitana. Both of the new arrivals have been at the center of early praise for the movie, alongside its "arcade energy" and "faithful" fights. Check out some of the first reactions below.

Film critic Michael Lee writes: "Mortal Kombat II is a fun popcorn flick. The fights are bloody, the stakes higher, and the dynamics stronger than its predecessor. Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage brings meta comedy and JCVD energy, while Adeline Rudolph’s Kitana gives the carnage emotional weight. "

Meanwhile, The Movie Podcast's Shahbaz Siddiqui admits it's got a lot of fan service in there, even when it doesn't quite work as a movie. "MORTAL KOMBAT II pulls its punches when it matters most, but seeing these characters on screen is still a total blast," they wrote. "It’s pure arcade energy and features a LIU KANG fight that absolutely RIPS! A messy ride for sure, but the fan service carries it."

Comic Book's Chris Killian praised the fidelity to the games, adding that it's a "stark improvement over the first one in just about every way possible - better fights, cooler costumes, and nastier fatalities." They added on Twitter: "It’s all still quite campy, but hot damn it’s a gory good time. MK2 is fun as hell and the most faithful #MortalKombatmovie yet."

Multiverse of Color agreed on the game adaptation, adding: "Mortal Kombat II is for fans of the game, featuring improved action sequences and gruesome fatalities that will impress. Johnny Cage and Kitana provide the beating heart of the story."

"Mortal Kombat II is a hell of a movie," That Hollywood S's Hunter Bolding tweeted. "Hits the video game styling, crowd-pleasing moments aplenty, satisfying story, it’s all here. I was struck by Johnny Cage and Kitana’s story the most."

Meanwhile, Journalist Law Shama says the movie "absolutely rips". They wrote on X: "It improves on everything that worked from the first one while improving the narrative, character motivations, and upping the action. Johnny Cage, Kano, and Baraka are hilarious. Kitana is perfect. I’m ready for round 3."
