Marvel star Simu Liu promises some "positive updates" soon as fan begs him to do justice to Sleeping Dogs adaptation
After months of radio silence, Simu Liu urges fans to "stay tuned" for his Sleeping Dogs movie
Almost six months on from the last update, Simu Liu promises that news on his Sleeping Dogs movie adaptation is coming soon.
After a Sleeping Dogs fan took to Twitter saying, "Simu Liu please do this game justice," the star replied, "Hope to post some really positive updates soon. Stay tuned." At this moment, the Sleeping Dogs movie has not been picked up by a Hollywood studio.
An update is well needed, as since the movie found its director in December 2025, we haven't heard much else on the project at all. The movie has had a strange road to release. The project was first announced in 2017, with Donnie Yen attached to star, but in 2025, Yen stated that the film had been shelved. Then in 2025, Liu took to social media to announce that the adaptation was moving forward and the script was finished.
The movie is set to be directed by Timo Tjahjanto, best known for his action flicks including Nobody 2 and 2018's The Night Comes For Us. The filmmaker has a lot of experience with choreographed mixed martial arts, which will come in handy when bringing Sleeping Dogs to the big screen. After his involvement was announced, Tjahjanto took to social media and said, "This will take time, but we'll make the best version out of it, cleaver, chopsticks n all."
Created by Square Enix, the 2012 game Sleeping Dogs shares a lot of similarities with the Grand Theft Auto franchise. Set in Hong Kong, the story follows a Chinese-American police officer and martial artist named Wei Shen, who goes undercover to infiltrate the Sun On Yee Triad organization. Players use Shen's martial arts abilities and weapons and gadgets they find throughout the game to take on a string of opponents. But much like GTA, players can also freely roam around the game's many locations.
It seems that Liu just cannot avoid delayed projects, as after his first solo Marvel movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, there is still no sign of the highly anticipated sequel, despite it being teased right after the first film. However, Marvel fans will see the hero in upcoming MCU movie Avengers: Doomsday this December, as the new trailer offers the first look at Shang-Chi back in action.
