With only 18 days until Christmas (eek!), we are fast approaching the date for many a Christmas special, including Luther and Sherlock. Not to be outdone by those super-sleuths is Doctor Who. Following its season nine finale 'Hell Bent' (read our review here), the show will air its own one-hour Christmas special titled 'The Husbands of River Song' on December 25.

In addition to a fresh batch of images (see the gallery above), the BBC has released a new trailer for the episode. Check it out - along with the 'next time' promo - below...

A new synopsis indicates that the Doctor will be called into action when he is recruited by the River Guard to battle King Hydroflax (Greg Davies) and his "giant Robot bodyguard". Plus, the return of Alex Kingston's River Song will please fans as the Doctor's wife has never met this Peter Capaldi-shaped incarnation before. All in a Christmas day's work!

The Doctor Who 2015 Christmas special, 'The Husbands of River Song', will air on Christmas day.
