Only one episode’s been broadcast and already it’s been recomissioned
HBO has given the greenlight to a second season of Game Of Thrones after the broadcast of just one episode. It’s not such a surprise, as the show has already been selling well to other broadcasters round the world, and, as Entertainment Weekly points out, there should be some lucrative DVD sales to add into the mix.
On the other hand, a US audience of 4.2 million (over multiple screenings, admittedly, though the first airing achieved a very healthy 2.2 million on its own*) must make HBO bosses think they’ve made the right decision.
“We are delighted by the way David Benioff and DB Weiss have brought George RR Martin’s amazing book series to the screen, and thrilled by the support of the media and our viewers,” said Michael Lombardo, president of HBO. “This is the continuation of an exciting creative partnership.”
(* True Blood , which is about the nearest equivalent series HBO has ever attempted, opened to 1.2 million… and look what happened there!)
