Watch the first action-packed footage from the Wonder Woman movie

As hinted at earlier this week, The CW's DC Comics special aired tonight showcasing an in-depth look at the comic giant's upcoming roster of superhero movies. If you were expecting the usual talking heads and previously-seen teasers, then you're in for a treat: co-hosts Kevin Smith and DC's creative officer Geoff Johns revealed the first footage from Wonder Woman.

This isn't the first glimpse at the titular Amazonian, as the character has already appeared alongside Batman and Superman in the various trailers for their soon-to-be-released blockbuster. But pish posh! This is Wonder Woman's show - the first female comic book hero to receive her own movie in DC's universe - and the sizzling footage included in the brief featurette is enough to make us wish it was 2017 already.

Even though Wonder Woman makes her DC debut in Dawn of Justice, there's the little matter of her fabled backstory that won't be tackled during that opus. Johns explains the desire to craft an origin movie for the character was a necessity, as her history isn't as common as her male counterparts." What we really want to do in the film, is really tell people who she is, where she comes from, and why she does what she does," Johns explains, "and we've never seen it on film before."

Watching the clip it's hard to fathom why it's taken so long for her transition to the big screen. This footage - in particular, one shot of Gal Gadot charging down a dirt road on horseback, her trusty sword swinging - is everything a fan could wish for. And, as the cast and crew attest, she's a strong, powerful heroine who knows how to kick butt while still retaining her humanity.

Directed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Elena Anaya, Ewen Bremner, Lucy Davis, Danny Huston, Saïd Taghmaoui, David Thewlis, and Robin Wright, Wonder Woman opens in the UK and US on June 23rd, 2017.
