The latest casting announcement for Spider-Man: Homecoming should firmly establish in everyone's minds that this is totally an MCU movie. Sony and Marvel's joint venture - the specifics of which are lengthy - allows for characters to cross over into Spidey's solo outing from the MCU and vice versa. It's a way to strengthen the bond between the two studios now that they're collaborating. It's also a treat for fans who've wanted to see Spidey join The Avengers onscreen for years.
That's why Iron Man's set to appear in Homecoming. But Stark clearly needs a non-superheroic pal for company as Jon Favreau is also coming back to the MCU. Yes, Happy Hogan, Stark's right-hand man, driver, and general dogsbody will be returning to the fold after a rather extended hiatus.
It's been a while since we saw Favreau onscreen in a Marvel movie. 2013 to be exact, when he appeared in Iron Man 3. As well as popping up in all three Iron Mans, he also directed the first two installments and went on to helm the latest live-action version of The Jungle Book. He's been busy, let's put it that way. Now that's back in the superhero game, alongside a pretty extensive cast of characters, it'll be fun to find out how he figures into Peter Parker's adventure.
Directed by Jon Watts and starring Tom Holland, Marisa Tomei, Michael Keaton, Robert Downey Jr, Jon Favreau, Donald Glover, and Zendaya, Spider-Man: Homecoming will swing into cinemas on July 7, 2017.
