Squid Game comes to life in first trailer for new Netflix reality show

The first trailer for Squid Game: The Challenge has arrived, teasing a real-life take on the hit Korean survival drama.

The original series follows a group of people with financial struggles who are invited to take part in a mysterious survival competition with a hefty cash prize. They must compete in a series of traditional games, but with deadly twists, risking their lives for ₩45.6 billion (that's the equivalent of around $38 million). It was released in September 2021 and became Netflix's most-watched show ever, being streamed for more than 1.6 billion hours in its first 28 days on the platform, and season 2 was announced last year.

Squid Game: The Challenge will start out with 456 contestants. Per the official synopsis: "As they compete through a series of games inspired by the original show – plus surprising new additions – their strategies, alliances, and character will be put to the test while competitors are eliminated around them." The trailer gives us a glimpse of players participating in a less brutal version of Red Light, Green Light, as well as their dormitory full of bunk beds and the masked guards in their pink jumpsuits.

The prize money isn't quite as hefty as the reward in the original series, but it's no small sum – the winner will take home $4.56 million, the largest single cash prize in game show history. The show will consist of 10 episodes and premiere globally on November 22. Batches of new episodes are set to release every Wednesday until December 6.
