Mary Jane Watson role may be recast for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and 4

Report suggests that Shailene Woodley may not return to the franchise

We recently learned that Shailene Woodley’s Mary Jane Watson would not be appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 , and reports are now suggesting that the actress may not appear in the recently announced Parts 3 and 4 .

When the news first broke, it seemed as if MJ was being bumped back to the third film for plot and pacing reasons. Now The Wrap is reporting that Woodley will likely be busy with the sequels to her upcoming sci-fi movie Divergent , and may not be available to reprise her role in Spidey 3 .

If this is the case, colour us surprised. We were wowed by her performance in The Descendants , and were expecting her to bring a bit of tenacity to the latest screen version of Watson.

Woodley has a diverse array of projects on her slate. She’ll next be seen in romantic dramedy The Spectacular Now , before leading Gregg Araki’s White Bird In A Blizzard and heading up the aforementioned Divergent .

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in the UK on 18 April 2014.
