How do I catch Ditto in Pokemon Go? All your questions answered

TODO alt text

It's finally happened: people are catching Ditto in Pokemon Go. The question is how, and what does the little guy do when you get him? At this point (it literally happened overnight) details are still forming, but here's what we know so far.

How do I know I've caught a Ditto in Pokemon Go?

You'll know straight away when you catch a pokemon, as you'll get an 'Oh?' prompt instead of a 'Gotcha!' as soon as the ball settles. You'll then see whatever you caught transform into the squidgy lump.

A bit like this:

What pokemon can turn into Ditto?

In theory, anything could potentially be a Ditto in disguise but obviously it's the most common pokemon being caught first and confirmed to turn up lumpy.

However, this is the list of confirmed Ditto so far:

  • Pidgey
  • Zubat
  • Rattata
  • Spearow
  • Metapod
  • Magikarp
  • Venonat
  • Paras
  • Ekans
  • Snorlax
  • Doduo
  • Nidoran♂
  • Mankey

Ditto can be caught using Incense, so presumably Lures will work as well although that's currently unconfirmed.

Pokemon Go's Ditto spawn the same for every one

This shouldn't be a huge surprise as Pokemon Go's information lives on Niantic's servers, not on your phone. So if one person catches a Ditto then everyone can. Let's make that clear - IF SOMEONE SAYS THEY CAUGHT A DITTO AND YOU CAN GO TO THEM. GO TO THEM

Have I met a Ditto and not realised?

Quite possibly. I can attest to that, as myself and a friend both caught a Ditto from the same Pidgey. However, while theirs was registered as new in the pokedex, mine wasn't. I hadn't seen any mention of a Ditto before though so it looks like Pokemon Go records the encounter in secret.

How does Ditto fight in Pokemon Go?

Ditto is listed as having two attacks: Transform and Struggle. What actually happens when you attack with one plays out much like the original games - Ditto transforms into the Pokemon it's about to fight, including the same attacks and stats, but it keeps its original levels and individual values. That means the CP will change.

The transformation takes a turn and Ditto will take a hit in the process. It'll also stay as that pokemon if it defeats it or gets swapped out. Ditto can't use Transform on an already transformed Ditto and if two Ditto fight they just swap chip damage.

How far does a Ditto buddy have to walk to earn candy?

You'll get a candy for every 3km you walk with a Ditto buddy.

Will Pokemon Go Plus tell me it's a Ditto?

If you've never caught a Ditto before but encounter one disguised as something you've caught, the Pokemon Go Plus will turn green for a discovered pokemon and not the the yellow of an uncaught Pokémon.
