Switch 2 beats the GameCube in lifetime sales as Nintendo's fastest-selling console ever officially shifts 23.68 million units
Nintendo 64 is next
Nintendo has revealed the Switch 2 has sold another 3.82 million units, putting it above the lifetime sales of the GameCube.
Over the last year or so, the Nintendo Switch 2 has been breaking records for Nintendo, with it almost immediately becoming the fastest selling game hardware device in US history, and over the last year or so of its life, it's continued to be a success. It took the console seven months to beat the Wii U's lifetime sales, and with the momentum it had, the GameCube was clearly in the sights.
With the release of Nintendo's latest financial results, it was confirmed that in the last quarter, the Switch 2 has sold another 3.82 million consoles, bringing its total to 23.68 million sold. And unfortunately for the Nintendo GameCube, that new figure places the Switch 2 in its first year (well, year and 25 days) ahead of the 21.74 million that the GameCube sold in its five-year lifespan.
Despite the GameCube being home to so many absolutely beloved Nintendo games – Super Smash Bros Melee, Zelda: The Wind Waker, and so on – it's easy to forget it didn't exactly light the world on fire in terms of sales, especially when its competition was the behemoth that was the PS2 and the original Xbox. At the very least, the GameCube has still sold more games than the Switch 2, with 208.58 million sold compared to the 58.17 million Switch 2 games.
Next in line for the Switch 2 is the Nintendo 64, which it needs another 9.25 million sales to match. Given that we're still waiting for Switch 2 to get mainline Super Mario, Animal Crossing, Pokemon, and The Legend of Zelda games, I can see that happening sooner rather than later. Granted, the upcoming Switch 2 price increase may make that take a bit longer than expected.
