Creepy Helldivers 2 trailer might tease a fight with the Illuminate, but Warhammer fans are convinced it's Chaos Gods: "They done gave us the warp with our 40K Warbond"
"Prepare the Gellar Fields!"
Helldivers 2 just got one of its coolest (but creepiest) trailers to date as Arrowhead teases a horrifying new threat facing Super Earth's finest next week, and some theorize it could even further expand on the game's Warhammer 40K crossover, which is arriving on the same day.
Today, developer Arrowhead Game Studios shared a teaser video titled Face the Unknown, showing a cute teddy bear dressed as a Helldiver floating through space towards a purple void, before visions of it being pulled apart and sprouting terrifying sharp teeth flash on the screen. The clip ends with a figure reaching towards the bear (we can see a vague silhouette reflected in the teddy's eye) and a date – August 12, the same day that the Helldivers 2 Warhammer 40K Warbond is releasing.
A mysterious phenomenon known as The Void has been spreading across the Galactic Map and absorbing planets thanks to the Illuminate for months at this point, so it'd be easy to connect this teaser to that. There are plenty of comments theorizing that we could be fighting a new group of the Illuminate next week – folks have been speculating about the addition of a Cultist faction for some time now. But what if it's something else entirely?
As fans have pointed out, the void in the teaser is giving major Warhammer 40K Eye of Terror vibes. Not only does the glowing purple and red void we see look like one of the rifts to the 40K universe's parallel Warp dimension, but the very same one that destroyed Cadia – the planet that the Karskin hail from. Y'know, the same folks you'll be able to dress up as thanks to the new armor being added in the Warbond next week. Coincidence?
We even see a prolonged shot of one of the bear's eyes glowing purple, much like how the Cadians' eyes were stained purple by the Warp. With that in mind, could we be about to take on 40K's Chaos Gods, instead? Many folks are certainly convinced.
"They done gave us the warp with our 40k warbond," as one comment puts it, as another speculates: "So we're getting 40k gear AND the Eye of Terror? …Nice." Another adds: "We get Imperial Guard gear just in time to dive into the Warp; prepare the Gellar Fields!"
We'll probably have to wait until next week to find out if this new narrative really is connected to the Warhammer crossover, but it wouldn't be too surprising. After all, there's a lot of love for Warhammer on the dev team – Helldivers 2 creative director Johan Pilestedt once joked that if the game was ever flooded with "giant microtransactions," it'd be to fund his Warhammer hobby, after all. Here's hoping that the collab might be a bit more significant than the Halo and Killzone ones to come before it.
