Persona 4 Revival has been given an ESRB rating right in the midst of this year's not-E3 period, suggesting that an appearance at either Summer Game Fest or the Xbox Games Showcase could be likely.
As highlighted on the Persona subreddit, the upcoming remake's ESRB rating has been added to its Xbox store page, giving it a mature 17+ rating. That gives it the same rating as Persona 4 Golden – the JRPG's expanded 2012 release – with almost identical content warnings given.
To be exact, Revival is set to feature "Mild Blood, Violence, Sexual Themes, Partial Nudity, Strong Language, Alcohol Reference" – the only variation there from Golden is that its "Language" warning has become stronger. Obviously, given that Revival is a remake (though whether it's of the original release of 4 or Golden is still unclear), you wouldn't expect drastic changes here, so this is all as you'd expect.
Really, it's the timing that's the most interesting part about this. This also follows the game getting rated by the Game Rating and Administration Committee of Korea, and at the time of writing, Summer Game Fest is set to kick off tomorrow, with the Xbox Games Showcase taking place on June 7. It was at last year's summer Xbox show that Persona 4 Revival was revealed in the first place, so it wouldn't be unreasonable to speculate that we might be due to get another look at it.
That's certainly what fans are hoping, anyway. "Xbox Showcase Sunday new trailer incoming," one predicts on the Reddit thread highlighting the latest rating, as another speculates an announcement is "imminent."
Very little of the game was shown last year, and no release window for it was given, either – it'd be great to get a more extended look this time around, and hopefully clarify whether or not the extra content included in Golden is going to be present. Persona 3 Reload controversially elected to remake the 2006 version of the game, losing the FES re-release's epilogue content (until it was added as paid DLC) and the Portable version's female protagonist.
Persona 4 Golden made a number of changes to the 2008 JRPG, like adding two extra social links and an additional chunk of story at the end of the game (including a new dungeon). Given that last year's trailer uses a song added in that re-release, and seemingly teases the protagonist's scooter being in the game, it seems pretty likely that this is the version that's getting revamped.
