"Like Prop Hunt, but chameleons": Viral new hide-and-seek game celebrates 2 million Steam sales after just 5 days as fans dub it the next "friendslop" banger
Meccha Chameleon is yet another co-op indie sensation
After indie gems like Lethal Company and REPO, fans have lovingly branded plenty of little games "friendslop" – the latest of which is a Prop Hunt-esque title currently taking the web by storm: Meccha Chameleon.
In case you missed it over the weekend, Meccha Chameleon seemingly came out of nowhere and impressed thousands of fans with its hilarious chameleon-like hide-and-seek chaos.
Put simply, you place a little guy (who you play as) somewhere and paint over him to match whatever his surroundings are at the time – and then you sit and wait, hoping your friends don't realize that hey, something isn't quite right about that person-shaped brick wall…
It's as amusing as it sounds, and I've honestly spent the last couple of days scrolling through various funny clips of Meccha Chameleon in action.
Unsurprisingly, it's been dubbed a new "friendslop" hit by players over on Steam, where it sits with "Very Positive" reviews right now. Not only is it well-received already, but indie developer and publisher lemorion_1224 (say that 10 times fast) is celebrating over two million sales.
That's just five days after release – in other words, a pretty big number for any brand-new title, not just an indie game.
The reviews see fans drawing all sorts of comparisons to other multiplayer experiences, namely Garry's Mod's own Prop Hunt. As one person so eloquently puts it, "Like Prop Hunt, but chameleons." Another calls Meccha Chameleon "a unique and refreshing take on the hide-and-seek genre."
I'm inclined to agree. In an era of various silly viral games like this one, it's not often that a title stands out – and Meccha Chameleon does just that. The creative possibilities feel nearly endless, and the co-op aspect makes it all the more fun.
