Nier creator Yoko Taro swoons over Gundam Rogue Orbit, says he wouldn't be confident enough to create anything cooler than Bandai Namco's new mech game
This from the man who is helping create the new Evangelion series
One of the most stylish announcements at Summer Game Fest this year was Gundam Rogue Orbit. Fans of the iconic mech series can't keep their excitement to themselves after seeing the game's reveal, and that just so happens to include Nier creator Yoko Taro.
Taro, who has always been vocal about his praise for other games, took to Twitter following Rogue Orbit's announcement to call it "insanely impressive." Though he mentions that he's been struck by all the recent game announcements, confessing he is overwhelmed by how good they all look.
In his signature self-deprecation, Taro goes on to say he wouldn't feel confident in his own abilities to create something as impressive as what he's seen in Rogue Orbit. That is, if someone asked him to make a Gundam game, though "no one's asking me to."
Rogue Orbit is indeed impressive, and looks to be the most premium Gundam game to date. It really seems like Bandai Namco paid attention to the widespread acclaim Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon received in 2023 and sought to make a Gundam game in its image. Rogue Orbit will be an original story that sets aside the franchise's love of human vs human conflict, instead pitting humanity against an unknown threat.
As for Taro, there are no game announcements from the creator on the horizon, it seems. Back in 2025, he admitted to fans that he has been working; it is just that his new projects keep getting canceled. In the meantime, however, Taro is actually dipping his toes into the mech genre. For the 30th anniversary of Evangelion, it was announced that Taro would serve as the writer for a new series.
Gundam Rogue Orbit is set to release in 2027 for PS5, Xbox Series consoles, and PC.
