First teaser for Apple TV's Cape Fear is an eerie fever dream – and not just because of Javier Bardem's uncanny blue contacts

Dune star Javier Bardem is here to make Amy Adams' life – and his eyeballs hurt like – hell in the nightmarish, bloody teaser for Apple TV's Cape Fear.

Based on Martin Scorsese's 1991 thriller of the same name, which was itself inspired by John D. MacDonald's 1957 novel The Executioners, the new 10-episode show sees Bardem play Max Cady, a recently reintegrated killer who vows to get revenge on the attorneys who put him in prison. Said attorneys? Patrick Wilson's Tom and Amy Adams' Anna, who seem appropriately unsettled when he reintroduces himself to them in the promo. Check it out above.

Judging by certain shots in the teaser (and Adam's accent), the series has kept the deep-south setting of Scorsese's adaptation. No real surprise there, though, considering he's one of its executive producers alongside Stephen Spielberg. It looks pretty blood-soaked, too, which is more in keeping with his interpretation than MacDonald's book or J. Lee Thompson's more faithful flick from 1962. One thing to note, however, is that this version of the Bowdens have both a son and a daughter. In Scorsese's movie, they only had the latter.

It opens with Anna ominously asking Tom via voiceover: "You ever look around and wonder, 'Do we deserve all this?'" As the trailer goes on, and we see Cady terrorize the family in increasingly violent ways, that question gets a sinister twist, as it switches to Bardem's Cady muttering, "You deserve this" over and over.

As it plays out, we see shots of a kid being held underwater, Cady stalking the Bowdens' daughter, and someone being run over by a car. "Is there any way Max could know about what we did?" Anna quizzes Tom after a montage of chaos rolls out. Erm, yes, I think he may be onto you, Anna. Will they be able to stop him before he blows up their domestic bliss?
