Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be the first film 'shot for Screen X,' as director says it's "something truly unique that nobody has experienced before"
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the first film with footage captured specifically for ScreenX
A new featurette for Spider-Man: Brand New Day reveals that the upcoming Marvel movie is the first-ever to be shot for ScreenX, with footage captured on set for the panoramic movie format.
In the brief clip, Director Destin Daniel Cretton explains that ScreenX came to set and, for the first time ever, shot specific scenes for the unique movie experience – similar to how movies are shot in IMAX. ScreenX extends beyond the main screen and onto the theatre walls, creating a 270° panoramic experience. In the brief clip, which can be viewed below, you can see the streets of New York City stretch and expand to the side walls of the movie theater.
"CJ 4DPlex and their team came to the set to actually shoot the footage that you will experience on screen in the wings of the chosen scenes of our film," Cretton says in the clip. "This is a first. It’s something truly unique that nobody has experienced before – you’re going to love it."
The downside that we've known about for a while is that there won't be any IMAX screenings for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Tom Holland is set to star in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, which premieres two weeks before Brand New Day and is being shown in IMAX for an exclusive four-week run. So you'll still be able to see Holland in IMAX... just not in a red spandex suit.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on July 31. The Odyssey is set to premiere on July 17. While we wait, check out our guide to all the upcoming Marvel movies or our breakdown on how to watch the Spider-Man movies in order.
