Spider-Man: Brand New Day feels like a "detective movie" and is the "best Spider-Man movie that we’ve ever made," says Tom Holland
Tom Holland says Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a "real mystery"
Spider-Man: Brand New Day's second trailer is right around the corner, but in a new interview, star Tom Holland has pulled back the curtain on the "mystery" leanings of the secret-shrouded Spider-Man movie.
"This movie is a real mystery and for a large portion of the film, even Spider-Man is a little bit at odds and lost and is like, 'What is going on?'" Holland told Esquire back in April. "We’re just trying to find ways to make this movie feel like a detective movie."
That's certainly interesting, and tallies with what we know about the upcoming Marvel Phase 6 movie based on the record-breaking first trailer. For starters, the identity of the film's villain is still being kept tightly under wraps, and it seems like Peter Parker won't know his (or her…) identity initially, either, which explains why Peter will have to turn detective.
Yesterday, a new synopsis confirmed a morsel of information about Brand New Day's mystery baddie, describing them as a "powerful villain no one can even see." Speculation has been rampant for months that Stranger Things star Sadie Sink is playing powerful telepath Jean Grey in Brand New Day, introducing the future member of the X-Men to the MCU. Jean isn't traditionally a villain (at least, not outside her Phoenix form), but you can bet Brand New Day is hiding a twist or two up its webshooters.
Elsewhere in the interview, Holland discusses Brand New Day's recent reshoots, noting their purpose was to add "extra layers" to the movie by inserting more jokes and expanding on the villain plotline. And Holland has high praise for the (nearly) finished result: "The movie is already the best Spider-Man movie that we’ve ever made.”
Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters in just over a month. Before then, you can keep an eye on the Spidey Tracker to see where in the world Holland and co. will be popping up next. The second Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer suffered an ignominious but increasingly common fate late week, when it leaked all over social media. If you're holding out to watch it in glorious, non-watermarked HD, there's just one day to go.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day releases in theaters on July 31, with early Prime screenings on July 29. In the meantime, get up to speed on the rest of Marvel Phase 6 with our guide to the other upcoming Marvel movies and shows.
