Avengers: Doomsday directors returned to Marvel because they "wanted to move the story forward" with Chris Evans' Steve Rogers

Avengers: Doomsday directors Joe and Anthony Russo have spoken about what tempted them back into the Marvel fold after a years-long hiatus from the MCU after Endgame.

"[Steve Rogers] was a character we spent a lot of time with over the years," Joe Russo told Fandango post-CinemaCon's Avengers: Doomsday trailer reveal.

"It just felt to us like the correct way for us to come back would be to continue that story of that character [and] to work with [Robert Downey Jr.] again, and to move the story forward. I think that's the thing that really excited all of us: we found a path forward that really was integral, really required both Chris and Robert for the story to be told."

The Russos, of course, have plenty of history with Chris Evans' Captain America, first helming 2014's The Winter Soldier, then directing Civil War, and rounding out the character's arc in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Now, it seems, Steve Rogers' job isn't quite done.

The character was the focus of the very first Avengers: Doomsday teaser. In it, Steve is shown returning home and cradling his child.

According to trailer descriptions from CinemaCon, the former Captain America has an extensive role to play in the Marvel Phase 6 crossover, even getting back in contact with Thor (Chris Hemsworth).

Chris Evans joins a huge cast of fellow Avengers, a new generation of Marvel heroes, and legacy X-Men characters in Avengers: Doomsday.

Shang Chi's Simu Liu has seemingly confirmed Tom Holland's Spider-Man will be swinging by too, despite being one of the noticeable names absent from last year's hours-long cast reveal.

Avengers: Doomsday hits cinemas on December 18, the same day as Dune: Part Three.
