New details surface on Han Solo and Boba Fett spinoffs

Outside of the central Star Wars movies, the only Anthology standalone in full swing is Gareth Edwards' Rogue One that's currently shooting in London. The second spinoff is said to focus on Han Solo, with Chris Miller and Phil Lord recently locked in to direct. Now, thanks to new intel from Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, we know just how far back this origin tale intends to go:

“He’ll definitely be probably in the high teens, low 20s,” Kennedy told EW. “We’re not introducing you to a 10-year-old Han Solo... I think the key here is that we are identifying an event or events in Han Solo’s life that gives you some idea of who he is and why he is the character we have all known to love."

She added: "You can imagine, given who we’ve chosen to come in and direct, it should be very entertaining and funny. Han Solo is the character inside Star Wars that everybody knows has a wit and sense of humor. So that’s what this should be."

Kennedy also volunteered some information on the third Anthology film, which is rumored to be a Boba Fett spinoff. Josh Trank was originally in line to direct, until the disastrous Fantastic Four production saw him exit the movie. That's not to say it's been put out to pasture: the current plan is to find another filmmaker to replace him.

“It’s still one of the stories that we absolutely want to tell,” says Kennedy. “There is a lot of innovative technology in and around what it is we’re doing with that story, so for a lot of reasons, we were comfortable postponing that. But we’re definitely still developing it... We’re trying to get to a point where we’re never rushing for anything.”

The third anthology film has now been yanked from its 2017 release date, although Kennedy says it's more likely pursuing a 2020 opening. Rogue One opens on December 16, 2016 with the Han Solo film slated for release on May 25, 2018.
