Matt Reeves will direct the sequel to Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes , Deadline have confirmed .

The news comes shortly after the Cloverfield and Let Me In director was named as the frontrunner to take the megaphone from departing director Rupert Wyatt.

Wyatt dropped out of the sequel for reasons similar to Gary Ross’ decision to leave The Hunger Games franchise: namely, because the time contraints for turning around the sequel were too tight.

Reeves handled large-scale carnage with visceral immediacy in Cloverfield , and Let Me In proved he could treat established properties with reverence (even if it wasn’t the most necessary remake).

And his appointment suggests he’s confident he’ll hit the 22 May 2014 UK release date that’s pencilled in.
