Freaky underwater houses. Squirrels with shark heads. Floating disembodied dolls heads with bitchy voices. No, it’s not Wednesday morning at Total Film Towers. It’s Terry Gilliam trying creeping us all out – again. If you were one of the many underwhelmed by The Brothers Grimm, Tideland might be the head-trippy film for you.
The plot follows Jeliza-Rose (Jodelle Ferland), a girl for whom “troubled” is an understatement. Her parents are junkies, and when her mother dies, her father (Jeff Bridges) takes her to a dilapidated house in the middle of nowhere. Lonely Jeliza retreats into a world of fantasy, where fireflies have names, bog-men stalk the night and squirrels are happy to stop for a chat.
Tideland was slaughtered by critics at the Toronto Film Festival, but maybe you’ll be enticed by the trailer .
