Skyrim update beta brings mounted combat to PC

The icy lands of the North got a little bit more interesting today with the announcement that gamers who opted into the latest Steam Beta Update will have access to mounted combat in Skyrim.

It's just in the beta right now, though. So others, especially console gamers, will have to wait a little while until that content can migrate to the Xbox 360 and PS3. As of right now they do not have a firm release date for when that might happen.

The full patch notes for the update can be found below, and instructions for downloading the beta on PC are located on the Bethesda Blog

To quote Daniel Bryan "Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!"

I wish more companies would do this with their patches, improve the game not just with fixes but with small content updates.

Dude, seriously. Well, it's been done by the GOTY, so maybe some of the more lenient publishers can look toward this and have a heart. But maybe it's just because of how much had to be originally be patched, maybe this is just a token of gratitude for our patience lol. But you're right, this SHOULD be done more often. It's funny, the JRPG Neptunia has like $70+ in DLC content and going, but every couple of months, NIS releases a free "allowance pack" which gives you a nice sum of extra in game currency. So whereas I snarl at their overall DLC offering, even they have a "hey, thanks for your continued support and playing" incentive.

Wait... people actually USE the horses in this game? I used one for maybe an hour or two in Oblivion then realized they were useless.

That's what I thought, too, even while using Shadowmere. However, that was simply BECAUSE there was no mounted combat. I mean, you have to dismount every five seconds to kill something or other. It gets very annoying. I for one am very excited for this patch. :D

YES! We are one step closer to getting a Horse Armour DLC pack! I'd re-buy Skyrim for my new PC simply for that reason.

there is horse armor... in a mod that is.

I'd rather have them patch in first person view on horseback. Horses in Skyrim are more hassle than they are worth though, unless you install a few mods. Even then...meh

does buttercup approve and do the horses get armor?

UNNNNGH.....Oh, GOD! /alloverkeyboard In all seriousness, I haven't yet played a game with horseback combat I've actually liked. Perhaps Bethesda will deliver such a thing to me.

You Sir may not have experienced the pleasure of Mount and Blade. The ultimate mounted combat game!

Very interesting. Seems cool, I've been playing the PS3 version but stopped a while back, bought the PC version last week for my shiny new machine and intend to give it a run at the weekend when exams are done. Would love to give this a go - not a big horse fan but this could convince me.

"not a big horse fan..."? A certain equine editor would like a word with you... In all seriousness though I hope they up the survivabilty of the horses or this added feature will be extremely pointless... Still very excited, if cautious about this. Excautious if you would.
