Red Dead Redemption Stranger mission guide

Like most of Rockstar's sandbox games, there's a wagonfull of additional side missions to complete and trinkets to collect. Red Dead Redemption is no different, this time we'll be focusing on the game's Stranger missions, where you help random citizens you meet across the game by doing tasks for them, some more violent than others. The guide aims to be spoiler free, so we'll spare you the gritty details of the missions plots, and just give you the info you need to check all these little adventures off.

From picking flowers to aiding and abetting a cannibal, you're definitely going to have your hands full.

Here you will find the titles of all the Stranger quests, where to go to initiate each quest, and minor notes that may prove helpful when you work to complete the quest. Stranger tasks will frequently present you with choices, which can dramatically affect your fame and honor stats.

NOTE: Sometimes you will not immediately be told where to go to continue a stranger's quest: in such cases, simply wait. Eventually, a marker will appear on the map directing you toward the next event.

American Appetites

Prerequisite:
Complete the mission, "Political Realities in Armadillo."

Notes:
• This is a three-part quest, and can take some time to complete. Just be patient. The areas you'll need to visit will always be marked with a large purple circle in your map: just be patient.
• Before starting the second part, you will need to complete the mission, "Justice in Pike's Basin."
• Before starting the third and final part, you will need to complete the mission, "Wild Horses, Tamed Passions."

American Lobbyist

Prerequisite:
Complete the mission, "An Appointed Time."
Location:
Blackwater
Notes:
• You can view the photos given to you for the mission.

Aztec Gold

Prerequisite:
Complete the mission, "Must A Savior Die?"
Location:
Sidewinder Gulch
Notes:
• For the first piece of the map, stay in Sidewinder Gulch and look for a pile of rocks near the edge of the cliff.
• Look inside the hut for another pile of rocks for the second piece of the map.
• Look at the base of the tall rock formation West of Matadero for another pile of rocks, and the third piece of the map.
• Go to Matadero to give Basilio the map, and then follow him to the treasure.

California

Prerequisite:
Complete the mission, "Women and Cattle."
Location:
Gaptooth Breach
Notes:
• This quest is a series of encounters with a man, you'll have to wait a few in-game days between each encounter in order to trigger the next one.

Due East of Agave Viejo, near the road.

So are these missions that need to be completed part of the main storyline? right now I have all the story missions complete and I haven't seen all of these stranger missions yet

These are side missions, if you want to 100% the game you have to do them all, but they aren't required for the main story missions.

I guess what I'm asking is: I've completed the main missions, now I'm trying to locate these... will I be able to access these side missions if I just go to these locations?

Without spoiling anything for anyone: if you've already completed the very last story mission then the "I know you" stranger missions will no longer be available. I believe all of the other stranger missions are still available though.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I found an extremely similar guide on GameFaqs maybe two or three weeks after Red Dead was released. It has nearly been two months and now a guide appears here. For all of my hate though, I do like the pictures, although simple, they add so much.

  • Pocotron - June 24, 2010 11:23 p.m.

I haven't seen all the comments, so I don't know if this has been mentioned, but completing "I Know You" is not necessary for earning 100% completion. It's the most interesting of the stranger missions and is completely worth doing, but since it isn't available anymore after you beat the main story, it isn't counted towards 100%.

Actually, I did read all the comments, I thought there was a second page of them, though.

Wow, this took a while to pop up. The most annoying sidequest was the guy building the airplane. I was pretty pissed to get all those ingredients and all his necessary items from EVERYWHERE just to see what happened. Arggh

man 100% this game was a pain in the ass. not so much hard as it was time consuming. At least these missions are a fun part of the 100%............though it seems a bit late for this to be posted

"I Know You" was a brilliant move on Rockstar's part. It's mysterious, intriguing, creepy... in months and in years in the future when I look back on this game, "I Know You" will probably be recalled the fondest of any missions/side quests.

  • Spybreak8 - June 25, 2010 9:06 a.m.

The only one I had problems with was finding beavers for the dude in Mexico. Of course then again I got this activity before Tall Trees opened up for me lol.
  • philipshaw - June 25, 2010 10:55 a.m.

I have a stranger mission that I failed but it won't reappear on the map, is that a glitch or it will the mission come back?
  • GamesRadarMichaelGrimm - June 25, 2010 4:13 p.m.

@philipshaw Sometimes the missions will take a few in-game days to reappear on the map, if it still doesn't appear try reloading your save and waiting a few in-game days.

Ok, is the guy from "I Know You" God, or the Devil? Cause he freaks me the ominous attitude freaks me the fuck out!
  • mgkyo666 - June 25, 2010 8:01 p.m.

Whoops! Forgot to retype the first part of the second sentence as: Cause his..! Mah baaaaddddd!
  • Nato_VanDookie - June 27, 2010 5:17 a.m.

Funny thing with the "I know you" missions: guy was standing on the edge of a cliff, got done talkin' to me for the first time and I pushed him off... guess I'll have to get those on another play through...
  • batman5273 - June 28, 2010 11:02 p.m.

I will be using this to finish my last three stranger missions
