6 amazing cult movies to watch on your PS3

Sony bringing leftfield movie gems to PlayStation

Words: on May 18, 2010

If you're a bit of an art-house dandy when it comes to movies, you'll be pleased to hear that Sony is bringing a new movie service to PS3 dedicated to indie flicks, world cinema, black and white classics and anything else that discerning film buffs would have in their collection.

It's a partnership with online film library MUBI and the service is planned to launch this autumn with over 300 films to choose from. Some movies will be free, others pay-per-view and there will also be an all-you-can-watch monthly subscription option. The show reel below gives a glimpse of the kind of movies we can expect:

Quite a tasty selection. If I had to choose out of that little lot the six movies that I'll be lining up first, it'd be these:

Oldboy

Part of South Korean director Park Chan-wook's incredible Vengeance Trilogy, Oldboy is dark, brutal and very disturbing. Also has an epic fight scene that wouldn't look out of place in a more violent, hammer-based version of Streets of Rage.

Withnail and I

One of the greatest, funniest, bleakest films to come out of British cinema. It's one of those special movies that gets better each time you watch it. I've seen it a good 30 or so times, but I'd watch it on the new PS3 service anyway, even though I've got it on DVD. That's how good it is.

Metropolis

Generally accepted as the original sci-fi film, director Fritz Lang's 1927 'masterpiece' Metropolis is often credited as a major influence for many cultural things that are important. I haven't seen it. I feel that I should. It's on the list.

The Host

South Korean movie that retells the classic tale of naughty scientists pouring toxic chemicals down the drain which consequently causes an amphibian to mutate and become a people-eating monster that terrorises a city. Brilliant. If I remember rightly, it somehow manages to be a touching, heart-warming story of family and friendship at the same time.

Dogville

About as un-Hollywood as movies get, this Lar Von Trier directed 'philosophical drama' is stripped of all but the bare bones and looks more like a minimalist arty theatre piece than a movie. But get over the fact that it isn't a conventional movie and you can enjoy one of the most memorable films of the last decade. And its got James Caan in it. I like James Caan.

This is England

Another British classic. Skinhead subcultures, racism, friendship, great music and national identity - a very real portrayal of disillusioned youth in Thatcher's 80s England. I say it's a real portrayal, but I spent most of the 80s in my bedroom playing on my Commodore 64, so it could be complete bullshit. I doubt it though.

That's my six. Any not mainstream movies you'd love to see on PS3?

A not-mainstream movie I'd like to see get more exposure is Repo! The Genetic Opera. This is the movie that Repo Men (and the book it was "based" on) totally ripped off. Basically, Repo Men is to Repo! as Avatar is to Pocahontas (the same plot, minus the music). Some awesome Repo! fan made this video

    It's worth checking out.

@ philipshaw: I can't watch the trailer here (at work) but you're probably referring to Lost in Translation (Bill in Tokyo with Scarlett Johansson), The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (Bill on an oceanic expedition) or Broken Flowers (Bill looking for the son he only just heard he had). Those are the big leading roles he played in independent cinema of the past decade.

I work as a voluntary projectionist in the local arthouse cinema on Sunday evenings. Don't get me started on the stuff I've seen that should be on this PS3 service. From the ones mentioned in the article, Metropolis and Withnail and I are the only ones I haven't seen. I'll take this opportunity to list some of my favourites that haven't been mentioned above, stuff you all should watch (international title in brackets):

Das Weisse Band (The White Ribbon) - black/white drama on a rural village in 1913 Germany. Children secretly engaging in vandalism and sadistic acts to take revenge on their devoutly religious upbringing full of mental abuse and corporal punishment. These kids would later put Adolf Hitler in office.

Un Prophète (A Prophet) - French gangster movie about a French Arabian who enters prison as an illiterate small time crook but starts a real career in crime when the Corsican mafia starts protecting him.

Waltz with Bashir - Animated documentary about an Israeli film maker looking for the truth on what happened when he and his army buddies invaded Lebanon back in 1982.

Lebanon - Claustrophobic, minimal war drama on that same invasion, completely taking place in and around an Israeli tank.

Il Y A Longtemps Que Je T'Aime (I've Loved You So Long) - Kristin Scott Thomas trying to start a new life after being released from prison, in a profound and never ever cheesy French drama.

Okuribito (Departures) - An unemployed cello player takes a new job as someone who prepares people for their journey... to the afterlife. Which means preparing dead bodies for their funeral.

La Meglio Gioventú (The best of Youth) - Best Italian film of the decade. Two movies, six hours, 35 years of Italian history through the eyes of two brothers and their divergent lives.

Hunger - Very intense British film on incarcerated IRA members protesting to get a "political prisoner" status from Thatcher. This shit really happened.

Volver (To Return) - Penélope Cruz playing a really good role in a passionate Spanish film. No words on the plot, wouldn't want to spoil it.

Special mention for being gamer oriented:

Ben X - Belgian film on an autistic teenager retreating into the world of an online MMO.

Beyond the Game - Dutch documentary on two professional Warcraft III players and their rivalry.

R U There - Dutch drama on a professional gamer getting lost in Taiwan. Still to be released, its world premiere was in Cannes last week.

Right on b-dog, I've been waiting since blu-ray came out for City of God, and a few others. Can't stand how slow they're taking with all the movies out there.

I can vouch for Oldboy and This is England, both good ones, especially Oldboy, pretty crazy though. The Host wasn't as good as I'd heard so many times, thought the first few scenes were great then it just went SyFy made for tv movie.

I just recently saw Dogville. I loved it. Especially the conversation at the end. It really makes you think. I'm a sucker for unique movies.

Pan's labyrinth is in my top ten list. :3

I have Metropolis on my netflix instant que, but I have yet to watch it. I will.

This is England looks good, I'll probably watch it.

I figured the U.S. would be stiffed...suppose our Digital Media rights differ quite a bit from other countries seeing as how we never saw VidZone either(not that I'm complaining). Appreciate the clarification, Cundy.

I have never seen Oldboy, and I want to. And I see Audition in that video. Hell yes.

I doubt we'll be seeing any of this action in the US.

But flipping through Mubi's available films (for US), I'd recommend After Life, which is about a waystation between life and the afterlife where people spend time deciding on one memory to take with them.

Oldboy, Eternal Sunshine, Once...some of my all time favorite movies are part of this!

Seen all of them. Is there anything more obscure? I've been watching a bunch of movies on my 'list' recently so if you recommend something I'll probably watch it.

    Agreed, Donnie Darko is amazing.
I recently did a Film Studies research project based on its cult appeal.

Oh btw I've just seen that fight scene in Oldboy. Am I alone in finding it quite hilarious? xD

Im from latin america, and well.. they should realize they are missing a large audience for artsy movies here. I love Lars Von Trier and it would be amazing to see idiotern or breaking the waves in proper HD. Too bad.

Initially the service will launch in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. No word when/if the US will get a look in.

Nice, even spotted "The Lives of Others". Any word if this will be available for U.S. or the UK? For some reason I feel the U.S. may not get this....could be wrong though.

Nice list Matt. I'm currently studying This Is England for my Media Studies A Level exam. Pan's Labyrinth is the one I'm most looking forward to seeing in HD. Also The Wrestler, Donnie Darko and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind caught my attention in the trailer.
    Can't wait for this. :D
