If you're a bit of an art-house dandy when it comes to movies, you'll be pleased to hear that Sony is bringing a new movie service to PS3 dedicated to indie flicks, world cinema, black and white classics and anything else that discerning film buffs would have in their collection.
It's a partnership with online film library MUBI and the service is planned to launch this autumn with over 300 films to choose from. Some movies will be free, others pay-per-view and there will also be an all-you-can-watch monthly subscription option. The show reel below gives a glimpse of the kind of movies we can expect:
Quite a tasty selection. If I had to choose out of that little lot the six movies that I'll be lining up first, it'd be these:
Oldboy

Part of South Korean director Park Chan-wook's incredible Vengeance Trilogy, Oldboy is dark, brutal and very disturbing. Also has an epic fight scene that wouldn't look out of place in a more violent, hammer-based version of Streets of Rage.
Withnail and I

One of the greatest, funniest, bleakest films to come out of British cinema. It's one of those special movies that gets better each time you watch it. I've seen it a good 30 or so times, but I'd watch it on the new PS3 service anyway, even though I've got it on DVD. That's how good it is.
Metropolis

Generally accepted as the original sci-fi film, director Fritz Lang's 1927 'masterpiece' Metropolis is often credited as a major influence for many cultural things that are important. I haven't seen it. I feel that I should. It's on the list.
The Host

South Korean movie that retells the classic tale of naughty scientists pouring toxic chemicals down the drain which consequently causes an amphibian to mutate and become a people-eating monster that terrorises a city. Brilliant. If I remember rightly, it somehow manages to be a touching, heart-warming story of family and friendship at the same time.
Dogville

About as un-Hollywood as movies get, this Lar Von Trier directed 'philosophical drama' is stripped of all but the bare bones and looks more like a minimalist arty theatre piece than a movie. But get over the fact that it isn't a conventional movie and you can enjoy one of the most memorable films of the last decade. And its got James Caan in it. I like James Caan.
This is England

Another British classic. Skinhead subcultures, racism, friendship, great music and national identity - a very real portrayal of disillusioned youth in Thatcher's 80s England. I say it's a real portrayal, but I spent most of the 80s in my bedroom playing on my Commodore 64, so it could be complete bullshit. I doubt it though.
That's my six. Any not mainstream movies you'd love to see on PS3?
