Paul Feig has been discussing the reaction to his plans for a Ghostbusters remake, and has revealed that he's in two minds as to whether or not to incorporate Ray Parker Jr.'s original theme.
"It's such an iconic thing that part of you goes, 'I don't want to change it,'" Feig told E!. "But then another part of you wants to update it. It's one of the biggest questions we're faced with."
One of the more immediate updates Feig has made is to introduce a new team of female Ghostbusters, the reaction to which he admits has been mixed.
"The first wave when you make an announcement like that is overwhelmingly positive," said Feig to Variety. "Everyone’s so happy and you’re like, ‘This is great.’"
"Then comes the second wave and you’re like, 'Oh my God.' Some of the most vile, misogynistic shit I’ve ever seen in my life."
"The biggest thing I’ve heard for the last four months is, ‘Thanks for ruining my childhood,’" he continues. "It’s going to be on my tombstone when I die. It’s so dramatic. Honestly, the only way I could ruin your childhood is if I got into a time machine and went back and made you an orphan."
Co-starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Cecily Strong, Ghostbusters will open in the US on 22 July 2016, with a UK date to be confirmed.
