Joss Whedon talks up The Avengers

Joss Whedon has talked with those lovely people over at SFX about his upcoming, much-anticipated comic book movie adap The Avengers.

In the exclusive chat, the one-time Buffy creator and all-round geek guru revealed the difficulty of keeping the momentum going when there are so many interesting dynamics to play with.

“What I will struggle with, in the outline and throughout, is that I would like to put these actors in a room and just make Glengarry Glen Ross ,” he jests. “We’re talking about really exciting people and at the same time I have to keep the momentum of the thing going. I can’t let it turn into a lull fest.”

He does promise, however, that “by the end of the movie you will feel ‘in’ with these guys”, something that he is certain to pull off. Considering the skill with which he balanced a multitude of different characters on Buffy , Angel and Firefly , we have no doubt that he can do justice to the Avengers.

Meanwhile, Whedon adds that he’s especially excited to have Mark Ruffalo on board as the new Hulk, after Ed Norton’s much-publicised departure.

“[ Marvel ] don’t hire Mark Ruffalo to say one iconic line and strike a pose,” he says. “They hire him because he has so much humanity in him. He’s the antithesis of the iconic actor. He’s so human.

“He was my first choice to play the part, and the fact he is playing the part is nuts! They went to great lengths to make that happen and they understood exactly why he was right for the part.”
