Heartfelt plea from the creators of the egg-shaped adventurer
We refuse to make the 'egg' pun, but there's (potentially) very exciting news for gamers of a certain age as today sees a new Kickstarter launched to bring back Dizzy, the egg-shaped star of several classic platform/adventure games from the 1980s and 1990s. Dizzy Returns has been pitched by The Oliver Twins themselves, who created the original series. Here's their heartfelt pitch video:
The game is being planned for release on iOS and PC in the latter half of 2013 if it reaches its funding target of £350,000 (about $558,000). Of course, there has been an iOS Dizzy game recently (a remake in the shape of Dizzy: Prince of the Yolkfolk), which was exciting in its own way for being the first Dizzy game in years, but ultimately fell down by being too short and simplistic for today's tastes, as well as being one of the weaker entries in the series in the first place.
But the new game really would be a new game, built from the ground up complete with 3D character models. The Oliver Twins speak of adding in side quests and different modes to cater for quick or long play sessions as well as varying difficulty levels. The art style in the concept images does look very inviting, even giving Dizzy a proper in-game explorer's hat. That's progress.
