Online functionality is not common in the Zelda series, but as mentioned in our Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds review, the latest entry actually uses the 3DS StreePass for online battles. Taking on other Zelda players is fun, but getting everything set up can be tricky, plus there are 50 medals you can earn from these battles that unlock a special boss! We're here to walk you through it all.
Setting up StreetPass
Before you can set up your StreetPass account in A Link Between Worlds, you'll have to learn about it from Gramps. He's found on the west side of Kakariko Village. He'll help you set up your first Shadow Link - these are the online forms that you can battle.
Your Shadow Links can equip any item you currently have (see our complete walkthrough for info on how to obtain everything you could need). The better gear they have, the higher their bounties - more on that in a moment.
Setting up StreetPass also spawns an apple tree near Link's House. The more battles you complete, the more apples grow. It's great for some easy hearts, and it comes in handy for one of the challenges - more on those later.
Battling Shadow Links
Once your Shadow Link has been set up, you can battle Shadow Links for anyone encountered through the StreetPass system (the game will occasionally spawn offline Links as well). Signs will appear near Gramps giving you hints on where they can be found. Each one has a bounty, calculated from the equipment they carry.
Once you find a Shadow Link, you can take him down to earn his Rupee bounty and add more apples to your tree.
