"As a consumer myself, I feel your pain" - in a rare pro-consumer move, PC cooler brand Arctic passes US tariff refunds back to its customers with a "dedicated sales promotion"
Arctic's CEO just restored some of my faith in CEOs
We all know it's a terrible time to try and build a gaming PC, or try to upgrade an existing one. High manufacturing costs are all over the place, but most brands seem content with passing those onto consumers. In a rare turn of events, PC cooling brand Arctic is taking a surprisingly wholesome step to help customers.
Last year, when the brand was hit hard by US tariffs brought about by President Trump, it had to raise its costs in order to continue operating. Now, after the Supreme Court has ruled some of these tariffs unlawful, Arctic is being paid back reparations. Instead of taking that as profit, Arctic's CEO has declared that a dedicated US sales promotion will take place and that "it will remain active until every single dollar ARCTIC received from the tariff refund has been paid back to our customers."
"As a consumer myself," said Arctic's CEO, Magnus Huber, "I feel your pain.
"We tried our best. Did lots of overtime, and still had no choice but to forward the tariffs to you, our dear American customer. Last year, I had mostly bad news to announce. This year, the Supreme Court declared some tariffs unlawful, and now Arctic gets the money back!
"We're passing it on to you by offering a dedicated sales promotion across the US."
It's not a common thing to see in this day and age: a CEO and founder of an international company who wants to help out customers instead of taking a big pay rise. But Huber continued by saying that Arctic "is my baby", and he says it's a dream come true that's only possible because of consumers.
As well as the above Short posted to the brand's YouTube channel, Arctic also posted the news in a blog post, saying that some prices have already begun to lower in US territories on the members of the product lineup that were impacted most by the tariffs.
Weekly digests, tales from the communities you love, and more
Arctic is currently celebrating its 25th year in operation, and is known for its thermal pastes, fans, and air and liquid coolers for your gaming CPU. Originating in Denmark, its products are sold around the world at various retailers.
The company is branding this decision as the Arctic Payback Scheme, and on the deals page of its website, it says "you save all year long", which might indicate how long the company estimates it'll take to pay things back in kind.
To give you a brief reminder of just how rare a move this is in today's PC market, we're in the middle of RAM shortages that are seeing AI companies strip the earth's supply of memory wafers. Consumer brands are then hiking up the costs of the RAM that they do have available because it's in shorter supply and manufacturing can't keep up. That's had a knock-on effect for SSDs, motherboards, CPUs, and that's not even mentioning how expensive graphics cards still are (seemingly permanently) since 2020's shortage.
MSRPs are considered deal prices all over the market right now; people are losing jobs in the wider gaming industry, prices are being raised even outside the tariffs situation, and even the biggest brands like Microsoft are reporting low hardware sales. All of this is going on, and yet CEOs don't seem to be in any hurry to pay back while raking in massive profits. I suspect that along with restoring some good faith with consumers, this is also going to make Arctic's wares popular choices for the foreseeable future. Hopefully it inspires other companies to do the same.

One of my earliest memories is playing SuperMario64 and wondering why the controller I held had three grips, but I only had two hands. Ever since I've been in love with video games and their technology. After graduating from Edinburgh Napier University with a degree in Journalism, I contributed to the Scottish Games Network and completed an Editorial Internship at Expert Reviews. Over the last decade, I’ve been managing my own YouTube channel about my love of games too. These days, I'm one of the resident hardware nerds at GamesRadar+, and I take the lead on our coverage of gaming PCs, VR, controllers, gaming chairs, and content creation gear. Now, I better stop myself here before I get talking about my favourite games like HUNT: Showdown, Dishonored, and Towerfall Ascension.
