We've known since 2024 that Ciri is replacing Geralt as the protagonist of The Witcher 4, a move that carries huge implications for the fourquel's gameplay and story, but developer CD Projekt Red is giving Geralt one last hurrah in the upcoming Witcher 3 expansion, Songs of the Past.
Being developed in tandem with The Witcher remake studio Fool's Theory, Songs of the Past is due to release on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC some time in 2027. Beyond those key details, we don't know a whole lot about the expansion, but CDPR has said it's a "major [piece] of content providing lots of hours of gameplay, including new story, characters, etc," which is why the studio doesn't want you to use the apparently reductive term DLC to describe it.
In CDPR's Q1 2026 earnings report, the DLC – sorry, expansion – is described as one last outing for Geralt as main protagonist before he hands over the reins to Ciri.
"The return of Geralt after more than one decade will be an excellent adventure, and a trip down memory lane, before we pass the baton to Ciri in the upcoming The Witcher 4," says CDPR joint CEO Michał Nowakowski.
Depending on your choices throughout the game, Geralt's story ends fairly decisively in The Witcher 3, and going off the name of the expansion, it seems there's a good chance it takes place before the events of the main game. Regardless, CDPR's senior community manager Laura Beitzel confirmed during a recent livestream that Songs of the Past will be "aligned with what you're familiar with" from the most recent Witcher 3 expansion, Blood and Wine, as well as "what you've experienced and come to expect from us when we do expansions." That suggests somewhere between 20 and 30 hours for Songs of the Past, which is pretty meaty indeed.
